Stop and Go is an exhibtion of photography and video centering around motion and stillness. It examines how different the two mediums are while holding very stong similarities. We see how much motion there is in stillness and how much silence can be seen in motion. Through close examination we learn how a message can be conveyed in a single caught second of time. Through photography we can experience how a whole story emerges in ones mind from a single still image. The viewer’s imagination becomes an important part of many of these works by allowing the artist to spark a flow of thought. The viewer can become engaged in a full mental narrative. Similarly we see how powerful an intricate narative can be and at times we see the beauty of repitition and how thousands of frames can make up a simple statement. The actual motion in video allows the artists to slow time down and control events and their impact on the viewer. At times video will contain more silence than even photography becoming a means of meditation. Creating a beautiful aesthetic image is at times the main focus of the artist. There are examples of video work shot frame by frame as if it were a combination of photographs set to motion.
Stop and Go also examines the hectic world we live in and the inner silence we search for. The exhibition shows the intricate psycological aspects of our lives and how we deal with them. On many levels we search for answers and at different periods of our lives we find ourselves content or in total upheaval.
Stop and Go consists of 24 photographs and 19 video works by 17 artists. The 19 video works are broken up into 4 video viewing stations in which 3 will have sound and one will run silent works.
